Telephone Horror

The other night, I re-watched an old made-for-television movie I saw as a kid in the 1970's.  To me, the creepiest part of When Michael Calls is when Michael, who's been dead for 15 years, calls his aunt to tell her that he finally realizes that he's dead!

After watching this Telephone Horror, I decided to check out other horror movies where the same theme "rings" clear!

I Saw What You Did (1965)-Two teenaged girls spend an evening making innocent prank phone calls.  But when they tell a man who just committed murder that they "saw what he did," their little joke quickly becomes quite serious.

Play Misty for Me (1971)-A fling between a disc jockey and an obsessed fan takes a frightening turn with another woman enters the picture.

When Michael Calls (1972)-With each ominous phone call from a woman's deceased nephew, one of her family members dies.  Will she be next?

Black Christmas (1974)-While on Christmas break, a group of sorority girls receive weird phone calls from a stranger.  Imagine their surprise when they find out that the calls are actually coming from within their sorority house!

Are You in the House Alone? (1978)-A teenaged girl is harassed by someone who torments her with threatening notes and phone calls.

When a Stranger Calls (1979)-A psychopath terrorizes a young babysitter, then returns years later to threaten her again.

Don't Answer the Phone (1980)-A disturbed Vietnam veteran terrorizes young women in Los Angeles.  In doing so, he also taunts a radio psychologist with descriptions of his gory crimes.

Disconnected (1984)-A young woman is getting very noisy, as well as disturbing, phone calls.  But are these phone calls real, or is it all in her head?

Lisa (1990)-14 year-old Lisa and her friend, Wendy, make up a game where they anonymously call attractive men.  When Lisa and Wendy call a handsome man named Richard, they don't know that he's a serial killer in the town where they reside.

End Call (2008)-The devil has a phone number, and if you call him at midnight, he will grant you a wish.  In return, however, he will control your life for the duration of the call.

One Missed Call (2008)-Several people receive voice messages from their future selves; messages that include details regarding their deaths.

Enter Three Murderers: Three Halloween Stories with a Nod to William Shakespeare

I am thrilled to announce that I've had a play chosen to be performed at Paris Junior College's 10th Annual Pyro Play Festival . This annual short-play festival will take place on the school's campus and run April 23rd through April 27th . There will be other unpublished works produced at the festival, and I am honored to have one of my plays showcased alongside the works of such highly talented playwrights! My play is titled, Enter Three Murderers: Three Halloween Stories with a Nod to William Shakespeare . This "monologue play" tells three separate stories of real-life killers who carried out their gruesome deeds on or about Halloween. In doing so, the audience is shown how their deeds mirror those of three murderers from Shakespeare's plays, specifically Macbeth , Titus Andronicus , and Arden of Faversham . In Scene I, we meet Nancy, a jovial grandmother from Tulsa, Oklahoma, who decides that murdering husbands is the only way she will find true happines...

Dean Corll and The Boys from Houston Heights

Today marks the 49th anniversary of the death of Houston serial killer Dean Corll.  Next year will mark the 50th anniversary of Corll's murder, as well as a time when so many Houstonians found out just what horrible fate befell the missing boys who crossed Dean Corrl's path.  My play, The Boys for Houston Heights, not only serves as a docudrama about Corll's early murders, it touches upon Houston's "lost boys" and what their parents were feeling during that time.  For those who are into true crime and what to learn more about this dark time in Houston's history, I have included a list of books, plays, and movies that tell the story of what people in 1973 referred to as The Houston Mass Murders: The Boys from Houston Heights  by Bradley Nies.  (Next Stage Press, 2018) The Candy Man:  The True Story of Serial Killer Dean Corll by Jessi Dilman.  (Trellis Publishing, 2021) The Clown and the Candy Man directed by Marcus Valentin.  (Cineflex P...
