If you are like me and you missed the Tony Awards last night, here is a recap of some of the awards celebrating the incredible works that set the standard for theatre arts in America!
Best Musical: Schmigadoon! Book, music, and lyrics by Cinco Paul. This stage adaptation of the Emmy-winning Apple TV+ musical comedy parodies the Golden Age Broadway musicals from 1943 to 1960.
Best Play: Liberation by Bess Wohl. A Pulitzer Prize-winning play, this work follows a 1970 Ohio consciousness-raising group and the daughters of its members who try to understand the movement's ultimate purpose.
Best Leading Actor in a Musical: Joshua Henry for Ragtime. Based on the novel by E. L. Doctorow, this musical stars Joshua Henry as Coalhouse Walker, Jr., a musician whose pursuit of justice against systemic racism turns violent.
Best Leading Actor in a Play: John Lithgow for Giant. Written by Mark Rosenblatt, this play stars John Lithgow as the celebrated, and sometimes controversial, children's author Roald Dahl.
Best Leading Actress in a Musical: Caissie Levy for Ragtime. With a book by Terrence McNally, this musical stars Caissie Levy as Mother, the compassionate matriarch of an affluent suburban family who undergoes a change in her opinions.
Best Leading Actress in a Play: Lesley Manville for Oedipus. A 2018 play by Robert Icke, this work reimages the original Greek tragedy and stars Lesley Manville as Jocasta, a partner in a high-stakes political power couple on election night.
